CHAPTER FOUR
The next morning was the morning of the full moon. It was dark when we woke, and the waxing moon hung low in the sky. My heart fluttered. I knew it would be full tonight, and it would be clear. The pack would initiate me, and my alpha would claim me as his mate. I’d be his forever, and in a day’s time, I would become a wolf.
“I’m going to hunt alone this morning,” Curtis said. “I’ll be back before dark to prepare you for the ceremony.”
“Don’t leave me,” I said. I knew that he would be back. My heart told me so. I was already beginning to sense his comings and goings. Because he’d shared his body with me so many times in this month, I was already starting to become his. But on this day, I felt vulnerable, even though I knew that Curtis lived to protect me.
“It’s something I must do. It is tradition. Like a marriage, I mustn’t be with my mate the day before her claiming. I’ll go while it’s still dark.” He kissed me hard and bid me goodbye, shifting into his wolfish form before he left the room. The door slammed closed behind him, and I felt truly alone. I knew the wolves he was to share me with, three of the leaders in his pack, who were kind and gentle men. I’d still been nervous about it, since there was an element to it that I didn’t feel sure about. And then there was the whole being a wolf thing to get over. Yeah, I wasn’t over that yet. I spent the day working, trying to push the inevitability of the night out of my mind. After I sent for dinner, one of the men that would initiate me came to my door.
“Yes, Derek?” I looked him over as he stood at my door. He wasn’t wearing a shirt. None of these people ever wore shirts. I rolled my eyes. Derek was handsome and noble looking, much like the other members of the pack. But he was clearly nervous too. He looked down at his feet.
“Cassandra … I mean … Alpha, I’ve been sent to bathe you.” My mouth dropped open. Bathe me? I could bathe myself.
“You most certainly will not! You may be part of the ceremony, but I won’t be letting you give me a bath before then.”
“This is all sanctioned by Alpha. The pack master will have me bath you in oil, and then I will pleasure you … before the ritual begins.” I felt a strange pull to the young man, and because of my connection with Curtis, I knew immediately that Derek was telling the truth. This man had been sent here just for that purpose, and Curtis wouldn’t take no for an answer. It was part of the ceremony, and I would submit.
“Come with me, Alpha.”
“Please don’t call me that,” I grumbled. I felt the pull again, this time stronger. I knew I would submit to Curtis’s will, but I wouldn’t be called “Alpha,” not yet.
